Batur Volcano on alert

The Batur Volcano has shown increased activity the last couple of months and travelers are now banned from climbing this sacred volcano.

Its status has been raised from 'active-normal' to 'alert' since recording 21 times of volcanic tremord with a maximum amplitude of 1-12 mm from September till now.

Under normal conditions volcanic tremor only occurs 5 times a day but now it's around 60 a day with smoke coming out of the crater.

The Batur Volcano has erupted 28 times between 1804 and 2000 and has caused significant damage to the area and surrounding villages.

It is still allowed to go to Kintamani or Penelokan though from where you have stunning views on Mount Batur, the crater and Lake Batur.

Serangan Island the new place to be for marine biologists

Serangan Island is located just below Sanur and is since the mid '90s easy to reach by means of a kilometer long causeway when Tommy Soeharto (the spoiled son of ex-president Soeharto) had plans of building a resort and casino here.

By building this causeway much of Serangan Island's underwater wildlife has disappeared and has even brought a change in tidal patterns causing Sanur's beaches to erode.

This is one of the reasons why Sanur has placed costly breakwaters in order to trap the sand.

Serangan Island is also home to the Sakenan Temple which is frequently visited during Kuningan Festival.

Worshippers used to wade through the mud during low tide with colorful offerings balanced on their heads, something you can find on numerous paintings.

Anyway the island has been designated by the Denpasar Municipal Administration as Bali's newest marine study center.

This is a great move since the island used to be famous for its green sea turtles but due to the illegal trade in turle meat are now hard to find.

Scientists and NGO's will be studying the underwater world around Serangan Island which is home to several species of fish and coral.

Just a stone throw away from Serangan Island you can find vast areas of mangrove forests which are also the birthplace of several marine species.

Let's hope that with Serangan Island's new label the coral reefs around the island will be restored to its former grandeur and that green sea turtles will come back to lay their eggs on Serangan's beaches again.

Wake up by explosives at Menjangan Island

Menjangan island (deer island) is located north-west of Bali and belongs to Bali's only national park 'Bali Barat National Park'.

It is one of the best spots for snorkeling and diving on Bali, not surprising considering the abundance of underwater wildlife.

It is estimated that around 100 divers a day visit the island and pay RPH 60.000 for a national park guide and another PRH20.000 ($2 USD) as entrance fee.

Unfortunately this popular diving spot is now under threat by local fishermen who use home-made explosives to blow up the coral reef to catch fish.

Especially around the northern part of the island known as Pos III the situation has decreased dramatically.

The same thing happened around 5 years ago but then with the help of NGO's, security agencies and dive operators the coral reef had a change to restore and that's already a hard thing to do.

Coral reefs consist of colonies of polyps which eat plankton and need sunlight for photosynthesis.

To reproduce they extract limestone from sea water. They then use this limestone to build new skeletons which takes for ages, it growths between 0.5 cm and 2.8 cm a year.

Why local fishermen suddenly have started again to use explosives for catching fish is unknown.

What is a known fact is that Indonesian government officials take it easy and love sleeping on duty.

They should have patrolled the waters around Menjangan island more often and observe the local fishermen more closely.

With the coral disappearing the divers and snorkellers will disappear as well leading to unemployment for not only the dive operators, boat operators and nearby hotels but in the long run also for the government officials themselves.

Let's hope some people in the local government have their eyes open and see the potential of Menjangan island to protect it in a way it should have been done a long time ago.

Should Bali be concerned now?

Yesterday's attack on the JW Marriott and Ritz Carlton hotels in Jakarta was another loony act by the psychos who think that the radical Jemaah Islamiyah is the best virgin club ever.

It raises Bali's security level to 'High Alert' and the Australian Government has already issued a travel warning.

Actually we shouldn't be talking or writing about this at all since that is exactly what these extremists want.

Should Bali be concerned now?

I really can't tell for sure. Hotel security, airport security, port security have been tight since the attacks in 2002 and 2005 and there isn't that much you can do anymore unless you want to hide in the bushes.

There will probably be some kind of impact on the tourism sector this year but even now most tourists feel secure and continue their tropical holiday.

Holiday numbers were up for the first 5 months of this year with 870.000 foreign visitors and it can still become a record year for Bali.

Let's hope Bali will get its new record.

Only 1 from 1000 will survive...

Yesterday ProFauna Indonesia presented a 100 meter long banner on Kuta beach with the title 'only 1 from 1000 will survive' referring to the Balinese turtles.

It's no secret that numerous turtles are turned into satay skewers every year. Especially in the town of Tanjung Benoa just above Nusa Dua the locals seem to prefer turtle meat above nasi goreng.

Catching turtles is illegal in Bali and one risks a 5-year prison sentence and a RP100 million ($9850 USD) fine.

Pulau Serangan (Turtle Island) is located just between Sanur and Tanjung Benoa and was once famous as a place where turtles loved to lay their eggs.

Due to the abortive construction of a resort and casino by Tommy Soeharto, one of the sons of the former Indonesian President Soeharto the island now lacks proper beaches.

Fortunately you can still spot turtles around Bali's reefs though. I spotted one near Mimpang Island just in front of Candi Dasa.

Now when you take a day cruise with Bali Hai Cruises leaving from Benoa Harbour to Nusa Lembongan they (http://www.balihaicruises.com/index.php) even let you adopt a turtle in close cooperation with the Nature Conservancy on the island of Nusa Lembongan.

Let's hope more travelers to Bali can enjoy the sight of these marvelous creatures in the future.

Before I forget, be aware that almost everything that comes from the ocean is illegal to bring home. Sea shells and even small pieces of coral are not allowed to bring home.

My girlfriend's mother had to learn it the hard way and brought back some small pieces of coral but had to pay a fine when arriving at customs at Schiphol Amsterdam International Airport.
