Exotic Birds at the Bali Bird Park

The Bali Bird Park (Taman Burung) is located just south of Ubud Bali near the village of Batubulan on the road to Denpasar.

It's open from 9.00 am to 17.30 pm daily and entrance fee is $24 USD for adults and $12 USD for kids and includes access to the Bali Reptile Park next door. It's quite expensive considering you're in Indonesia where prices in general are much lower.

Nonetheless the Bali Bird park is home to the biggest collection of Indonesian birds such as the endangered Bali Starling, the great Birds of Paradise from Papua but also the Golden Necked Cassowary from northern New Guinea and many other species from Africa, South America and Australia.

We never visit zoos or whatever animal park for obvious reasons but for this park we made the exception because we've always wanted to see the rare Bali Starling and Birds of Paradise; these species are almost impossible to find in their natural habitat.

The Bali Bird Park is set in two hectares of landscaped gardens with several lilly ponds, 2000 tropical plants and 50 palm varieties. The park isn't huge but interesting enough to spend 3 hours in.

In these gardens you also find several Indonesian hornbills, South American Macaws and Cockatoos literally eating out of your hand so ideal when you bring the kids along.

This is also the place to see a bird demonstration where hornbills and macaws fly over and occasionally the White American Pelican wiggles across one of the fields.

The coolest thing about the park are the two jungle-like walk-through aviaries where you can find several exotic birds flying around so watch your head ;-)

They are very tame but not so tame that you have the time to walk over and shoot tens of pictures.

Another surprising attraction is the Toraja house where you stand eye-to-eye with several owl species such as the impressive Bubo Sumatranus and a huge Green Peacock from the island of Java.

The Bali Bird Park also has a special conservation program where they breed the endangered Bali Starling, Pesquet's Parrot and several Macaws. The Bali Starling will eventually be released into the wild while the others will stay at the park.

You can have a look at the young ones in the incubators at the nursery home and laboratory of the park.

When you have some time left you can head over to the Bali Reptile Park next door where you'll find two huge Komodo Dragons, several snake species, frogs, crocodiles, lizards, iguanas and tortoises. The information given here is as good as at the bird park.

There are guides around who can give you a small tour and let you hold one of the iguanas if you like ;-)
