Seminyak Bali: home to the island's finest villas and boutiques
Seminyak Bali -- A short introduction to this little trendy village
Seminyak village is located just north of Kuta and Legian. It's pretty unclear where one of these
villages start and where the other one ends. But each one of them has a distinct character that attracts hordes of tourists...
Tourism started to discover this village when Kuta was getting
overcrowded with numerous hotels, restaurants and more shops.
Instead of
attracting the same crowd as Kuta and Legian, Seminyak focuses on tourists
who want more than the average luxury during their holidays.

Just you and the rustle of palm trees...
Seminyak Bali has become famous for its beach, fancy and trendy restaurants, cafes, clubs and of course the large selection of private villas, excellent resorts, art galleries and choice of designer boutiques.
So if you like to do some great shopping and fine dining after a day at
the beach, then you will surely have a terrific time here.
In this section I will describe all the things you need to know about this
little trendy village, whether you are staying here or if you
are just
passing by...
- Getting
around: find your way through the main
streets and the narrow alleys in the Seminyak Bali area...
- Things to
do:
besides shopping and dining there is more to do in this little town...
- Restaurants:
the most famous restaurants of Bali are found here...
- Private Villas and hotels: find here some cool villas and if you're not into them have a look at one of the resorts...
Getting
Around the Seminyak Bali area
I think the Seminyak Bali area is
not really the place for walking, as most shops and restaurants are
scattered
around and located along the long busy main street Jalan Raya or within
narrow alleys.
So to make life more easier (and hey, you are on a holiday) you can
better just take one of
the many taxis that drive around town
till late in the
evening. The taxi fare will be around Rph. 20.000 since to the airport
you pay around Rph. 50.000.
Most villas however offer a shuttle service or a private car
with driver that will take you around the village.
Another option you could consider is to rent a car or
even better a motor
bike.

When walking
around you can bump into
odd looking
creatures...
Besides the regular Yamaha or Honda
motorbike that everybody seems to
drive around on the island, you can even find heavy custom
made motorbikes that will have your heart skip a beat.
If you want to take it somewhat slower, there are many places
that rent bicycles. Some villas are even able to arrange one that
includes gears, suspension etc.
There is one main road running straight through
Seminyak called
Jalan
Raya Seminyak. Traffic is crazy at this street and you can bet
on heavy
traffic from early afternoon till the beginning of the evening. So try
to
avoid this street by car or motor bike when you're in a hurry.
Nevertheless if you don't mind going for a walk you're lucky because this street has a wonderful pavement to walk on
where you can find
the most fashionable boutiques and other shops selling jewelry, art,
furniture, souvenirs but also the usual tourist trade.
The restaurants and
other interesting places are found on the east side
of Jalan Raya Seminyak, towards the beach. Jalan Double Six is basically
the border between Legian and Seminyak and here you can find
clubs and
great restaurants next to the beach.
The top-end and most popular restaurants on the other hand are
all on Jalan Oberoi (also called Jalan Laksmana or Jalan Kayu Aya) and a few fancy
restaurants have opened their doors on the connecting street called Jalan
Petitenget.

At the beach in Seminyak Bali
Besides clubbing at Double Six you can also head towards Jalan Dhyana
or Jalan Abimanyu where many bars and clubs are found.
You can get a bit confused when finding your way around Seminyak. But
at the
end, all streets seem to
end at the beach. So you definitely don't need
to worry about getting lost...

Things
to do around the Seminyak Bali area
The first thing you will notice when arriving in Seminyak are the many
restaurants and shops. By the way, shopping here is the best ;-)
Besides the beach, the clubs and funny looking creatures there are
fortunately many
other things to do and see as well...
Spa in Seminyak: There are many independent professional spas around Seminyak.
At
these beautifully decorated spas you can enjoy all types
of
treatments that can last for hours or even the whole day. It's all up to
you.
You should also check out the hotel resorts or spa villa resorts
where
treatments are given in exceptional settings.
Shopping: Everywhere in Bali you can find shops. But
here the shops and boutiques at Jln Raya Seminyak
are fancier and meet the quality of Western styled clothing
(incl. the size). So this is the place for buying nice clothing,
souvenirs, furniture etc. It might be more expensive then other places,
but never more than at home...
Beach: Just like other villages along the south-west coast of Bali, Seminyak
beach is just as popular. However the water currents are very
dangerous so check the color of the flag first before running in.
Besides the clean beaches at Seminyak you can also head for the more
quiet Petitenget beach, just at the end of Jalan Oberoi.
Petitenget Temple: This
temple might not be as crowded as Tanah Lot or
Uluwatu, nevertheless it's one of the important sea temples in
Bali. It belongs to
the
string of six temples set along the coast and is built by the most
important priest Nirartha. If it's a national ceremony day in
Bali, then
you will find a lot of activities going on here.
AJ
Hacket Bungy Jumping Tower: A thrilling experience on
Jalan Double Six is bungy-jumping right at the beach. AJ Hacket is
an international company that maintains
high safety standard. So at least you can worry about other things when
you are standing on the edge overlooking the Indian Ocean.
Bali
Horse Riding: There are a couple of stables near Seminyak which organize
horse
riding tours. The most famous is the Umalas Equestrian Resort
Bali
(contact@balionhorse.com) and there’s another one called Tarukan
Equestrian Center (+62 361 747 06 44). Expect to pay around $30 US for
one hour horse riding through rice fields and along the beach.
Nightlife in the Seminyak Bali area: Besides fine dining, there are many clubs and cafes that go on till
late in the evening. Tourists and expats gather together all night to
enjoy the wonderful tropical atmosphere and of course the delicious
cocktails. Popular spots are Ku De Ta and Hu'U, which is usually
packed.
Others are found at Jalan Abimanyu and Jalan Dhyana. Read
more about these places at the Restaurant
Section below.
Other Attractions near Seminyak Bali:
Tanah
Lot:This sea
temple is one of the most famous temples on Bali and
also one of the busiest. We've visited this sight a couple of times
and even though there are bus loads of tourists there’s something
magical about the place. Not surprising considering the perfect
location with stunning sunsets in the background...
Golf: The Nirwana Bali Golf Club is located right next to the most
photographed temple of Asia, the Pura Tanah Lot and is just 40 minutes
from Seminyak. At this 6,170 meters of golf course you can
enjoy a
game of golf along the rice field paddies, creeks, forests, valleys,
black
beach and the amazing cliffs of the Indian Ocean...
Surfing: Seminyak
beach is an excellent place for advanced surfers. Just minutes away you
can also find Canggu
beach which is also popular for surfers who can tackle
complicated waves. For the beginners their is ample opportunity at Kuta.
Here you'll find enough Balinese surfers who would love to show you how
to catch your first wave...

Restaurants around Seminyak Bali
Seminyak
is known for its many restaurants that serve culinary
treats. Mostly the owner or chef is a foreigner, so
not
surprisingly the menu is often western styled with occasionally a
mixture of the Indonesian or Balinese cuisine.
There are a couple of
restaurants which are really
well-known in Bali and are often
featured in glossy magazines about Bali. Every night people stand in
line so they can experience top cuisine. So as you may have expected; reservations
are necessary, best a couple of nights in
advance.

Khaima Restaurant in the heart of
Seminyak Bali
In
Seminyak the restaurants do not only aim at creating the most delicious
dishes, but they focus also on decorating the place (something you
won't always find in Bali ;-). Therefore
the restaurants have their own
character and special ambiance which attract all sorts of
people.
The most famous restaurants are all
located on Jalan Oberoi. However on Jalan Petitinget, the road
connected to Jalan Oberoi more restaurants have recently
opened their doors. So check out this street as well when you are
looking
for another great dinning venue.

Preparing a
fabulous dinner...
The Livingroom
is one of the popular restaurants
that serve Asian and Balinese cuisine. At night the candles light up
the
place and with its comfortable furniture it actually looks like a real
living room.
Not far
from the Living room you have the Hu'u.
This is a totally different
place as the restaurants transforms itself into a club during the
night. Very
popular among young people and expats.
Another place that
is always packed with expats and tourists is de Ku De Ta. It's
located right at Seminyak beach so during the day people
flock
here to be seen and to enjoy the atmosphere while working on
their tan. At night many parties
are
organized here. So check out their schedules when you are here.
La
Luciola is also at the beach and when you are looking for
a nice
ambiance together with Italian food, than this is another
popular option.
A just recently opened restaurant is Sarong
at Jalan Petitinget. It serves food from all over the world in a
amazingly beautifully decorated restaurant. Reviews have been great
about this place, so definitely worth a try.
Our favorites restaurants in Seminyak Bali where we had a great time and where we
enjoyed tantalizing dishes are:
Manneke
Pis: We were surprised to see a Bistro named after the famous little
statue in Brussels. And once entering, we were actually in
Belgium. The menu which includes real Belgium delights is
superb,
just as the ambiance. And while enjoying the food and Belgium beer you
can drift away on their wide collection of Jazz and Blues...
Khaima
Bali: If you are looking for a different taste then you must head to this
restaurant on Jalan Oberoi. Just like its decoration, the authentic
Moroccan taste will make you think you are in a real bazaar. Every
Friday
and Saturday there are belly dance performances, so order a shisha and
lounge away in this Moroccan spectacle...
Zula
Restaurant: This restaurant is the place to be if you are
looking for
breakfast,
lunch or dinner that doesn't contain any traces of animal protein. Even
die-hard carnivores will find enough to choose from and won't
miss
their daily dose of meat. Their unique combinations of ingredients will
have you experiment with new tastes in no time...
Local
Eats: Right on the busy main street of Seminyak you can find the local
delight "Ocha". Here you can order Nasi Campur which is basically created
by yourself. Just head over to their food display and choose from all
the mouthwatering Indonesian dishes. Their garden is a great place to
enjoy your food. This place is popular among expats too.
