International or domestic flights to Bali

Find out how to reach this tropical island easily

There are many flights to Bali leaving from the major airports in the world. I have flown with Singapore Airlines, British Airways, KLM and Malaysian Airways and I'm impressed with the Asian airlines. They had the latest on-demand inflight entertainment and the service was fantastic.

Overall flight was great and I got my first glimpse of Asian hospitality...ahhh I couldn't wait to land in Bali and see more of it...

There are no direct flights from Europe to Bali though. You have to transit through Hong Kong, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore before jumping again on an aircraft to Ngurah Rai airport Bali.

When you fly from London Heathrow to Bali with Singapore Airlines, British Airways or their code-sharing partner Qantas you will transit at Changi Airport, Singapore.

Changi Airport has special computer desks with free internet (also free wireless when you bring your laptop), numerous tax-free shops and enough coffee bars to kill some time before your next flight to Bali.

When you have more than a couple of hours to spend hop on one of the buses, taxi's or MRT trains to downtown Singapore. They are cheap and since Singapore is so small you'll be there in no-time.

When you take a flight with Malaysian Airlines or their code-sharing partner Air France/KLM from Europe you'll transit in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

This is a huge airport with also lots of facilities just like Changi Airport. Even though KLIA is far out of Kuala Lumpur there's a KLIA Ekspres train that can take you within 30 minutes to Kuala Lumpur central for 70 Malaysia Ringgits return (around 14 Euro's).

A friend of mine swears by Cathay Pacific from Europe and loves to transit at Hong Kong before he continues his flight to Bali.

Flights to Bali from Australia -- When you're leaving from Australia to Bali there are a couple of airlines with direct flights. Closest Australian city to Bali is Darwin with flights operated by Airnorth and Garuda Indonesia. This last airline is not even allowed to land in Europe anymore so it's not recommended unless you're into swimming to Bali.

From Perth there are enough flights with Ozjet, Qantas and Garuda Indonesia to Bali.

Jetstar Airways, which is a subsidiary of Qantas operates direct flights from Melbourne and Sydney to Bali. Valuair which is part of Jetstar Airways operates flights from Singapore to Denpasar, Bali.

Flights to Bali from the USA -- From the USA there are a couple of choices but again no direct flights. From Los Angeles most Bali flights transit at Taipei, Taiwan before continuing your flight with China Airlines to Bali.

When you depart from San Francisco your fastest option would be to fly through Hong Kong and take Cathay Pacific to Bali.

When you fly from New York to Bali your fastest route is to fly to Narita, Tokyo and then fly with Japan Airlines on a direct flight to Bali.

Another fly-around-the-world option is to fly from New York to Sydney and then take the last stretch to Denpasar with Garuda Indonesia but this option takes around 30 hours.

Before you can put your feet on one of the many beautiful beaches or rice fields don't forget to buy a tourist visa upon arrival.

Cheap flights to Bali with domestic airlines -- There are loads of cheap flights to Bali from Jakarta and other smaller Indonesian cities.

There is a choice of various domestic airlines that change their names as fast as you change your underwear.

The only two airlines my girlfriend and I like to take are AirAsia and Lion Air with a young fleet of aircrafts, good safety records and cheap prices. You can even book tickets online, which makes it very convenient when you're not in Indonesia yet.

During the Christmas high season we paid around IDR 700.000 one-way Bali-Jakarta, which is around 50 Euro's or 70 USD. In the low-season flights to Bali with AirAsia or Lion Air are much cheaper. We often pay around 30 Euro's/50 USD. Pretty cheap for a two-hour flight right?
